To continue sharing my favorite restaurants in Lawrence and Mercer counties, I wanted to share with you Rachel’s Roadhouse. Rachel’s is located between Mercer and the Grove City Outlet mall on route 19. It features burgers, sandwiches, tons of appetizers, entrees, and drinks. It is typically packed with waits anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour. Living so close as a kid, we didn’t visit Rachel’s often because of the long waits and the fact that they do not take reservations. Nonetheless, there are a few things that I think are really good at Rachel’s and are worth waiting. On this particular night the wait was 30 minutes for a table for two, so we grabbed some drinks and sat on the patio waiting for our table.
The first thing we had to order was the potato skins. This is my brother’s favorite thing on the menu. They are deep-fried potato skins that are covered in american cheese and bacon. They are warm, comforting, and everything you want from a potato skin. This order was very large for us, so we could not finish it. We ate it and the rest of our leftovers for dinner the next night.
This is the Louisiana Chicken Sandwich. It has been my favorite for years. The chicken is topped with Cajun seasonings and grilled. Then they top it with greens and mozzarella on a toasted baguette.
This sandwich is where I fell in love with greens. The greens are flavorful and add a nice contrast in texture from the melty cheese, juicy chicken, and crispy bread. We ordered the homemade chips as a side dish and I requested the homemade chip dip to go with them. The chips are crispy and not too thick. The perfect homemade chip.
Because I love the greens so much, we also ordered the French Quarter burger. It has the exact same toppings as the Louisiana Chicken Sandwich, greens and cheese. This is one of my favorite burgers that I have ever had. Plus, we ordered it with sweet potato fries. I think sweet potato fries are hard to get right. If they are cooked until really crispy they burn, but not cooked enough and they are soggy. These were perfect. Slightly crispy on the outside but tender and moist on the inside. They are really good dipped in the chip dip. I suggest your get a side of the dip.
Finally, we ordered dessert. This is the Hoho cake. While it looks a little like a hoho, and the components are there, this is way better. It is really chocolatey and light at the same time.
We had a great time at Rachel’s. Our server was very nice and checked on us often. Plus, they have great specials. They also have an club where they send emails with specials and free stuff for your birthday and anniversary. We enjoyed our free appetizer of potato skins for our anniversary month during our trip.
